Makutsi Main Camp

Elephants from Rondavel

Makutsi Main Camp is set on about 10 hectares of tropical and landscaped gardens that provide guests with plenty of quiet places to relax and take in the surroundings. The camp is rustic, clean and well organized, offering privacy and personal attention to each and every guest. Nestled among indigenous trees, Makutsi offers two warm thermal mineral water pools, allowing for adventure and relaxation to be combined.

Guests stay in African style Rondavels (Bungalows), scattered around the open and spacious Makutsi Camp. All Rondavels have en-suit bathrooms with hot and cold water, electricity, a mini-bar, coffee/tea facilities, ceiling fans and a private terrace.

As there is no boundary fence around the camp, animals are able to roam around freely, which allows guests to enjoy their own private safaris whilst walking in camp or sitting on their private terrace. Anything from monkeys to elephants come roaming through camp if they feel like it, this is their territory after all. This also means that guest security has to be taken very seriously, and we have a detailed chat with all new arrivals regarding behavior while in camp, and other rules like acceptable walking hours (7am - 17h30pm). Outside of these hours, guests are picked up and dropped of by vehicle. Awareness, common sense and respect of nature are required at all times when in camp, which increases the guests enjoyment and respect of the natural bush and its wildlife.

The gold of Makutsi is our natural, warm mineral spring water. This water can be enjoyed in our 33m outdoor pool, and indoor Roman Bath. This allows for a perfect way of relaxing and recharging your batteries in between the safari and excursion adventures. The same water also feed the Rondavels, and healthy mineral water pours out of your showers and taps.

Indoor & Outdoor pools with warm mineral water

The mineral spring water comes from the earth at approximately 34 degrees Celsius. The outdoor pool is 33 meters long and set among the tropical gardens, a real oasis. The indoor "Roman Bath" is filled every morning at 9am, and emptied every afternoon. This means the water temperature is generally higher in the Roman bath than the outdoor pool, which cools down overnight.

How do Mineral springs form?

A filtration hot spring is geothermally heated mineral water that is initially fed by rain water that seeps into the Earth through faults and fractures. As it travels into the Earth, it becomes subject to increased energy from natural geothermal heat, and is exposed to gases and an often wide variety of minerals from rock and mineral deposits. The water adsorbs the minerals via leaching, is heated by the geothermal heat source, and then returns to the Earth's surface.

Meals are served in an open Lapa. All the food served at Makutsi is fresh and organic. We have two of our own organic vegetable gardens, each about the size of a football field. Most vegetables are hand-picked in the afternoon, and served in the evening. We also have our own heard of Brahman cattle, and also regularly serve venison meat. Both our cattle and the game have big areas to roam in, which means the meat that we serve is lean and healthy.

Breakfast: Buffet Breakfast with fresh seasonal fruits, cereals and musli, egg orders as you like them, toast, coffee/tea.

Lunch: Lunch is not included in your package, but a 2-course meal can be ordered at breakfast time (at own cost).

Dinner: A 3-course set menu is served during dinner. Guests sit together at big tables and chat about the days happenings.

Hippo Hide
top

We drive hourly shuttles at set times to our viewing deck ‘Hippo Hide’. The Hippo Hide overlooks a small pond which is regularly home to several Hippos, monitor lizards and crocodiles. As most animals need some water every day, anything could come by for a drink during your visit, so keep your eyes and ears open. This is an ideal spot to pass time and listen to the sounds of the bush, and to quietly observe animal behavior.

River Lapa & Viewing Deck

"Lapa" is the traditional name for a building that has no walls, just a roof.

The lapa & viewing deck on the edge of the Makutsi River is a place for game viewing during the day, and by night serves
as a bar, a perfect spot for a sundowner as the sun sets over the Drakensberg Mountains.
